Restaurant owners contribution to saving the environment

How do restaurant owners contribute to saving the environment by using a grease separator?

Operating a major commercial hotel or a small catering business, they all encounter obstacles in the workplace. Disposing of wastewater is one of the biggest obstacles since it contains fat, oil, and grease (FOG), which can cause environmental issues.

Grease and oils will collect on the pipe walls once such untreated effluent is dumped into the public pipe system. These substances, when dumped with other wastewater components, can cause corrosion, clogs, and foul odours.

Consequently, prior to being discharged into the public sewer system, this effluent needs to be pretreated.

What can be done to avoid discharge of FOG?

Products like grease separators like grease traps or grease interceptors need to be installed in a commercial kitchen environment. This helps retain greasy wastewater in kitchen drainage to avoid fatberg in the main sewer network. This can be used in any commercial kitchens of Airports, Hospitals, Restaurants, Hotels, shopping malls and commercial buildings.

What is a grease Separator?

Grease separator is basically a container that can be placed underground or outdoors of a commercial kitchen setup. It is used to collect fats, oils and grease (FOG) from wastewater that is generated from the kitchen operations.

Now, a simple question you may ask: how does it work?

Since the fat substance floats on water, these grease separators allow the FOG material to float, which is removed, while allowing the water to sink at the bottom and eventually displace into municipal water sewer systems.

Let's talk about the environmental benefits of using a grease separator:
Helps Save Energy

Immediately after wastewater is sent into a public or municipal water sewage system, a significant amount of energy is expended to separate the grease from them. For which a sizable, highly developed filtration apparatus and skimmers are used. The collected grease or oily material now needs to be disposed of at a landfill, which raises the expense of transportation and has negative effects on the environment. Grease separators/traps would save a tonne of energy if they were put in commercial kitchen setups.

Mitigate the greenhouse Gas emissions

If the wastewater is not treated for FOG and dispatched into the public water sewer system, a lot of energy will go to separate grease from the water. This use of electricity will eventually release millions tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. So, by treating the water on an individual commercial kitchen scale we can reduce the greenhouse gasses emission, thus protecting the environment.

Help with methane production

Did you know that recycling organic waste results in methane gas production? This can be used to power facilities that treat wastewater. The sludge left over after the treatment procedure is complete is being used by many treatment facilities as their own source of energy. Anaerobic digestion used to remediate this sludge results in the production of methane, much like how food waste breaks down in landfills. Consequently, once FOG is added to the sludge in the digester, it will encourage the growth of bacteria, which will result in twice as much methane being produced. The local commercial kitchens' FOG is being collected by these wastewater treatment facilities and used to produce more methane.

Generating Biofuels

Cooking/deep-frying oil can be used to make biodiesel, but today we can even convert FOG to biofuel. Due to the pollutants present, it is challenging to convert FOG to biofuels, although it can be a step towards environmental advantages. Biofuels emit fewer greenhouse gases and pollutants than fossil fuels do. Moreover, when burned, it doesn't produce carbon dioxide. Therefore, the fats, oils, and grease that grease separators gather can be used to create biofuel, a clean fuel.

Hence, if you own a restaurant and have not yet installed a grease separator, it is imperative that you do so in order to improve the environment.
